A word from the house
Welcome to Ticknall's decorating menu
Ticknall is a village that rewards a second look. The red-brick and stone cottages along the main street, the cast-iron water taps still standing at the roadside, the old tramway path running off towards the lime yards, and Calke Abbey sitting just beyond in its park like a house that forgot to stop being the eighteenth century.
You'd think a village like that would have its own painter and decorator with a page to its name. Until now, it didn't. Ask Google for a Ticknall painter and decorator and it has, at various times, offered a firm in Scotland.
So consider this the house menu. Everything we serve is listed below: what it is and how we prepare it. Order by phone on 07526 022230, or use the little form and we'll ring you back. Served throughout Ticknall (DE73), and in Calke, Melbourne, Repton, Hartshorne, Smisby and Stanton by Bridge.

Decorating in Ticknall and beside Calke
Ticknall grew up beside the Harpur Crewe family's estate at Calke, and you can still read that history in its brick cottages, its lime-working and pottery past, and its iron water taps. Today it's a village of characterful homes, walkers heading for the Abbey's parkland, and quiet lanes.

The bill of fare
How much does a painter and decorator cost in Ticknall?
This is the one menu without prices, and for a good reason. A cottage bedroom with lime walls, a kitchen of twenty sprayed doors, and a set of sash windows are entirely different orders. A printed price would be wrong for nearly everyone.
What makes an order bigger: uneven or old plaster, lots of woodwork, lead-safe preparation, high stairwells, and the masking that spraying needs.
What keeps it simple: several rooms booked together, and walls in good order.
Every order comes with a written quote after a visit, made for your house.
Ask the house
Questions, answered
Can kitchen cabinets be sprayed instead of replaced?
Yes. Most wood, MDF and many laminate or melamine doors can be sprayed after proper cleaning, sanding and a bonding primer.
How long does a sprayed kitchen finish last?
With good preparation and a quality spray lacquer or paint, many years of normal use. It's far tougher than a brushed finish.
What paint should be used on old cottage walls?
A breathable paint, such as limewash, clay or mineral paint, or a breathable emulsion, so the wall can release moisture.
Do you paint sash and casement windows?
Yes, inside and out, including easing sashes so they open freely after painting.
Is it safe to sand old paint in a cottage?
Paint from before the 1960s may contain lead. We test and use lead-safe methods.
How much does kitchen spraying cost?
Every kitchen is different (number of doors, materials, colour and condition), so we quote each one individually after seeing it.
Do you cover Melbourne and Repton?
Yes, along with Calke, Hartshorne, Smisby and Stanton by Bridge.
How disruptive is interior spraying?
Masking takes time, but the spraying itself is quick. Where practical, doors can be removed and sprayed away from the kitchen.
